Skybridge, or just the deck
Every ticket puts you on the 41st-floor skybridge and the 86th-floor deck, in that order, on a fixed slot. The nine and ten o’clock slots go up before the haze builds; the last ones catch the city lighting up.
Merdeka Square, Chinatown, the mosque
A loop through the Moorish government buildings, the old railway station, the national mosque and Petaling Street. Air-conditioned between stops, which in this climate is the whole argument for taking one.
Kuala Selangor, after dark
Ninety minutes north to the mangrove estuary, a boat out once the light goes, and thousands of fireflies pulsing in the berembang trees. Most trips stop for seafood at the fishing village first.

The Batu Caves
A four-hundred-million-year-old limestone hill on the edge of the city, hollowed into a chamber big enough to lose a cathedral in, with a Hindu shrine at the back of it. The 272 steps were repainted in rainbow stripes in 2018 and the photographs went everywhere. At Thaipusam in January or February more than a million pilgrims climb them, many carrying decorated kavadi frames on their shoulders.

Kuala Selangor Fireflies
On the tidal stretch of the Selangor river the berembang mangroves hold colonies of Pteroptyx fireflies that flash in unison, so whole trees pulse on and off together. It only works on a dark night, which is why the boats go out around the new moon and skip the nights after heavy rain. Electric boats or paddled sampans only; the outboards were retired because the noise and light broke the display.

Primates of Sabah
Borneo is the only place outside Sumatra with wild orangutans, and Sabah stacks the odds: rehabilitated apes at the Sepilok platform, proboscis monkeys with their absurd noses on the Klias and Garama floodplains, pygmy elephants along the Kinabatangan.
